Friday Night Date

Music and lyrics by Claudia Anderson

The end of his workweek he comes home to her
He is patient and settles to wait
With ruby red lipstick and gloves in her hand
She prepares to go out on a date

They’ll pose for a photo on this Friday night
The first year of their wedded bliss
Her smile’s Debbie Reynolds’ and his Danny Kaye’s
Their image is frozen like this

Friday night date, a tradition for them
All their lives, it’s a promise they’ll keep
Friday night date, recognition
It holds them together the rest of the week

He opens the car door and slips her inside
Special care because she’s almost due
He shuts the door firmly then runs round the back
He’s a gentleman, acting on cue

Friday night date, a tradition for them
All their lives, it’s a promise they’ll keep
Friday night date, opposition
No matter the conflict…..together

There are photos of Fridays for decades of marriage
And each one with smiles ear to ear
There’s no hint of quarrel or contrary notion
No losses or illness appear

These images, they tell sweet lies of the past
Books of memories are all we possess
And photos of Fridays revealing devotion
Perhaps tell the truth in the end

Friday night date, a tradition for them
All their lives, every week   we observed
Friday night date, their salvation
And thanks to the pictures—preserved
