He Called Me Beautiful

Lyrics by Claudia Anderson. Music Etude by F. Carulli.

He was gentle and polite with dimples in his cheeks
A violin in his hand
A celebrity of sorts in this sleepy factory town
Concertmaster of the local band
Made a name for himself playing heroes on the stage
Don Quixote, Thomas More and Harold Hill
Thirty years ago seems to me another life
In a place inside my heart he lingers still

He called me beautiful
I believed I was beautiful
Because he said so

If I read the letters now that he wrote to me back then
They surely would make me cry
He appealed to me to join him in mutuality
We read Shakespeare and I vowed to try
Talked for hours every night were we friends or were we more
He wanted more and I was cautious and afraid
Thirty years ago seems to me another life
In a place inside my mind his words have stayed

What does it mean when you are young and you can’t tell
Do I know more today than I knew then
If someone’s words could make me feel beautiful again
My beauty in his eyes it would reveal

We both moved on and I suspect we often think
Of each other and are wistful for our youth
And I wonder does my name every come to him at all
When we remember do we share a common truth

We said our permanent goodbyes and we never spoke again
Thirty years–another life

He called me beautiful
I believed I was beautiful
Because he said so
